Contains student drawings, travel sketchbooks, speeches and writings on topics such as architectural education and the Bay Area Tradition, as well as records of consulting projects. The bulk of the collection consists of project files, primarily from the 1960s, that contain specifications, correspondence, notes, product literature, reports and drawings. The Cannery, UC Santa Cruz and Sea Ranch projects are particularly well-documented.

Joseph Esherick (1914-1998) opened his San Francisco architectural firm in 1946 and was a major influence on residential design in the Bay Region. His major projects include demonstration houses at Sea Ranch, the Cannery in San Francisco and the Monterey Bay Aqarium. Bernard Ralph Maybeck (1869-1957) studied architecture at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Returning to New York, he worked for Carrere and Hastings. Maybeck sought his fortune out West in 1890, first in Kansas City, then in San Francisco. In 1890, Maybeck married Annie White, who became his office manager.
